The Advantage Of Letting Go – Graphic Design Tip #89
This post is a continuation of graphic design tip #89 in our article “101 Graphic Design Tips for Business Success.”
Don’t Be Afraid To Let Go

Are you wincing every time a particular client calls your phone? Do you feel like they are stalking you through your email? Unpleasant and draining clients can become a big problem really fast. If the relationship isn’t working out, don’t be afraid to let the client know that it isn’t working out. Let it go and put your energy in places where you want and need to be.
Great artistic work can only be produced as a result of a harmonious synergy between client and designer. If the chemistry is not there you will know it almost immediately. The quality of your work and your client’s satisfaction will be seriously compromised. It is almost never beneficial to continue under these circumstances unless you feel like the situation will take a positive turn. Be prepared with a professional exit strategy if it takes a turn for the worst.
Be Honest

Thoughtfully prepare a solution to help your client with the transition. Give them a tangible reason for why you must end the relationship. Openness about your personal differences may be acceptable if you are tactful in your delivery. Just be considerate and keep it as non-personal as possible. Leave them with a recommendation for a designer that would be more suited to his or her needs.
Break-ups are always going to be a little uncomfortable, but you will both be happier in the end. Make it a rule to work with clients that excite and energize you. You need to have a healthy, honest relationship with your clients in order to do your best work.
