Balance Of Give And Take

Healthy relationships of any kind are a delicate balance of give and take. If you take too much without giving back you can leave a person feeling empty and used. Even if your relationship is purely professional, that shouldn’t stop you from being thankful for what they have provided. Your clients and your colleagues are your livelihood, they provide you with the opportunity to work, feed your family, clothe and shelter yourself.

Showing people how grateful you are for how they have influenced you is a great way to strengthen relationships. Make sure to say thank you to your clients, as well as everyone around you who gives you the gift of time to help you and be there for you. This can be one of the most agreeable parts of your job. Taking time to do something just for the people who support you. It’s a wonderful feeling.

Show and Express It!

A small gesture could be a quick email expressing how much you appreciate their business. You can do a surprise drop-in with coffee or bagels or provide them with inexpensive sports tickets. Activities where you can spend time together like a round of golf or lunch are especially effective ways to bond. Showing up at an open house or event for your client’s business is also a good way to express mutual support. Tailor your gifts to what your client or colleague really enjoys or needs.

Don’t forget to thank your friends and family for believing in you. Telling the people you love how much you appreciate them is good karma. It costs nothing to tell them how much they have helped you and your work. The bonus is warm fuzzies all around and a nice dose of humility to remind yourself of how lucky you really are.
