Have you ever gone to a restaurant because they are known for their amazing calzones, fabulous fries, or secret special sauce? On the other hand, have you gone to a restaurant that had an over-packed menu offering everything under the sun, but nothing was particularly good?

Is there one thing that you know you are good at? You can nail illustrations, generate killer logos, or do a really great direct mail piece. Think of this as your “special sauce” that people will go out of their way for. Become an expert in a particular niche. People will refer to you if you can make yourself valuable because of specialized knowledge.

What’s Your “Special Something”?

We all want to be good at everything, but if you are stronger in one area, you can actually capitalize on it by focusing at being the expert in that area. Many clients will use multiple designers based on their strengths. If they want an icon designed, they may search for someone who focuses on this area. A new business may be searching for someone that is an expert on brand identity packages. Another client may pick a web developer based on their coding skills and capabilities.

You can sometimes overstretch by trying to be everything to everybody, which is why it’s important to find your passion early on and promote it. Incorporate it into your mission statement and pepper your site with references to your skills in that area. Word will spread that if someone needs your “special something” they will search you out.

Becoming an expert in one area ensures that you are getting clients that are a good fit. Your clients will be happy getting what they need; your particular set of skills nothing more, nothing less.
