Speak Up, Graphic Designer

There is no better way to get yourself out there and broadcast what you are capable of than public speaking. It may be intimidating at first, just approach it as a way to mentor and hone in on what you believe in. There is an avid interest in design in general, so there is certainly a place for you to offer your unique perspective on design.

You can start out small by reaching out to your local community. Offer to visit high schools, youth groups, or service clubs to discuss future career choices or simple design theory. When you are ready to move on, contact a speakers’ bureau and let them know that you are available. Speakers’ bureaus usually vet their speakers, so be prepared to wow them in order to get booked. Don’t expect payment at first, you will be rewarded with recognition and experience for later engagements.

Speak On One Thing You’re Expert On

Speech from Expert

Become an expert in an area of business, like branding, marketing, etc… that you can speak on. Or, come up with several reasons why the right design choices are necessary for business success (or successful marketing campaigns).

People want to hear about your unique niche or take on a subject. Make sure that you own your presentation and make it “you”. Make it entertaining, educational and fun. To succeed at becoming a great speaker, you must bring something special to your presentation. Consider your personal experience, what knowledge do you have that others would need to know?

Then, speak! Give examples. If you can prove quicker results using the right designs, you will be in demand…especially if you can deliver…so, make sure you can deliver after your wonderful speech.
