Are You One Of Us? – Join A Professional Organization
This post is a continuation of graphic design tip #28 in our article “101 Graphic Design Tips for Business Success.“
Graphic Designers’ Organizations

- The Freelancers Union
- Graphic Artists Guild
- AIGA – Great organization for many things, but something very important is that they promote business savvy-ness in designers.
Never underestimate how important continuing education is in this field. While you can’t always be in school, you can always be learning. Some of the best places to learn are from your fellow Graphic Designers. There are many excellent organizations that you can participate in that will connect you with a community of Graphic Designers. They can be a great source for wonderful industry speakers, contests and discussions.
Give Back To The Design Community

Keeping yourself on the cutting edge is important. You always want your work to look fresh and not dated. There are great opportunities to learn new techniques, shortcuts, and styles through professional organizations. The opportunity to give back to the Design community and mentor is another great advantage to a membership. Sharing what you have learned or just venting about your most annoying project with someone who understands (priceless).
Many organizations such as the AIGA have added bonuses like free lectures, discounts on books and conferences. You can also use your memberships as an added resource for your resume and reference to potential clients.
You will meet many wonderful people that are all struggling with the same issues and that can help. It will also renew your creative energy being surrounded by new stimuli. After a meeting or lecture you will find yourself just itching to dig in to that next project. Challenge yourself with joining one of these a year and find which organization suits you the best.
